What Namecoin is

Namecoin is the original merged-mining chain — AuxPoW chain ID 1 — live since 2011 as a decentralized naming system. Its node is continuously rebased onto upstream Bitcoin Core (31.x as of mid-2026), which makes it the most modern node in the entire AuxPoW universe. Blocks target 10 minutes on the standard 2016-block retarget.

An enormous amount of Bitcoin-pool work still points at it — about 621 EH/s as of 2026-10-02, measured from our own node’s headers — essentially via F2Pool and ViaBTC, the two major pools still offering NMC merged mining. That works out to about 160 blocks and a few hundred transactions a day: a quiet chain secured by a vast amount of work.

Nobody anywhere publishes NMC per-block fee or pool telemetry; its data gap is total and its banking cost trivial. BasinTwo’s own node archives the chain forward from 2026-10-02.

FAQ

What is Namecoin (NMC)?
Namecoin (NMC) is the original merged-mining chain, live since 2011 as a decentralized naming system. It is SHA-256d proof-of-work with 10-minute blocks, merge-mined (AuxPoW chain ID 1) under Bitcoin parent pools — about 621 EH/s pointed at it as of 2026-10-02, measured by our own node.
Can you mine Namecoin directly?
Not on its own, and you don’t need to: Namecoin is merge-mined (AuxPoW) under Bitcoin parent pools. Point your SHA-256 machine at a pool that carries NMC — F2Pool or ViaBTC — the two majors still offering NMC merged mining — and it arrives as a kicker on your BTC payouts, for the same hashes you were already doing. Solo AuxPoW setups exist, but pool merged mining is how virtually all NMC blocks are found. Namecoin is where merged mining began (2011) — the longest-running AuxPoW arrangement in existence.
Where does this data come from?
From BasinTwo’s own Namecoin full node, synced block-by-block from genesis over the coin’s P2P network — no snapshots, no third-party APIs. The page reads the same public JSON feeds anyone can: basintwo.com/api/chain/nmc and basintwo.com/api/nodes/nmc. Our forward archive for this chain began 2026-10-02; indicators that need deeper history say so instead of faking it.
