What is the Litecoin halving?

Every 840,000 blocks — roughly every four years at Litecoin's 2.5-minute block target — the number of new litecoins created in each block is cut in half. Like Bitcoin's halving, it is a consensus rule enforced by every node at an exact block height, not a scheduled calendar event.

The countdown above is an estimate: it multiplies the blocks remaining to height 3,360,000 by the 150-second target. Actual block pace runs slightly fast or slow as Scrypt hashrate moves, so the real date drifts by days to weeks.

The subsidy schedule

subsidy(height) = 50 / 2^floor(height / 840,000) LTC
current era (blocks 2,520,000 – 3,359,999): 6.25 LTC per block
next era (from block 3,360,000): 3.125 LTC per block

Litecoin's past halvings, each stepping the subsidy down on schedule:

Why the halving halves revenue per MH/s

A Scrypt miner's Litecoin income is their share of what the network pays out per day. The payout per unit of hashrate — the hashprice — is:

LTC revenue per MH/s per day = (86,400 s / 150 s) × (subsidy + avg fees per block) × (1 MH/s ÷ network hashrate) × LTC price

before: 576 blocks × (6.25 + fees) LTC × share × price
after:  576 blocks × (3.125 + fees) LTC × share × price
→ the subsidy component of LTC revenue per MH/s drops 50% overnight

Unless LTC price rises or fees grow to compensate, every rig earns roughly half as many dollars per megahash from Litecoin the moment block 3,360,000 is mined. The least power-efficient rigs go cash-flow negative first and shut down; difficulty then adjusts down and the surviving miners recover network share.

Looking for a halving price prognosis?

You won't find one here — BasinTwo publishes no price predictions, for the halving or anything else. What we publish is the part that is mechanically certain: at block 3,360,000 the LTC subsidy halves, the subsidy component of LTC hashprice drops 50% overnight, and every rig's break-even electricity rate moves accordingly. Whether that is survivable is a question about your machine and your tariff, not about forecasts — and that math is computed live on our rig profitability pages: the L9 and L11 Pro class carries the efficiency to cross the halving at most tariffs; the L7 class is the one the halving squeezes first. Their payback tiles already flag any horizon that crosses August 2027. For the class-by-class verdict in plain language, the school's L7 vs L9 vs L11 lesson walks the cutoff, and how long one LTC takes shows what the halving does to every wait.

The Dogecoin cushion: merged mining

Litecoin miners have a buffer Bitcoin miners lack. Most Litecoin pools merge-mine Dogecoin via AuxPoW — the same Scrypt work secures both chains at no extra energy cost, so a typical Scrypt rig earns LTC and DOGE simultaneously. Dogecoin pays a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block that never halves, so the DOGE side of revenue is untouched by a Litecoin halving.

Because only the LTC half of the paycheck is cut, a Litecoin halving reduces total Scrypt revenue by less than 50% — and the DOGE share of miner income grows after each one. See LTC + DOGE merged mining for how the combined revenue stream works, and model both coins in the mining calculator.

FAQ

When is the next Litecoin halving?
At block 3,360,000, when the subsidy drops from 6.25 to 3.125 LTC. At the 2.5-minute block target that lands around 2027 — four years after the August 2023 halving — but the exact date is only an estimate that drifts with actual block pace. The live countdown on this page recomputes it from the current chain height.
What happens to Litecoin miners after the halving?
Subsidy revenue per unit of Scrypt hashrate is cut in half overnight. The least power-efficient rigs go cash-negative first and shut down, then difficulty adjusts downward at the following retargets. Litecoin miners have one cushion Bitcoin miners lack: merged-mined Dogecoin rewards, which do not halve and so soften the total revenue cut.
Does merged-mined Dogecoin income halve too?
No. Dogecoin pays a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block forever with no halving schedule, and most Litecoin pools merge-mine it via AuxPoW at no extra energy cost. Because the DOGE side of revenue is unaffected, its share of a Scrypt miner's total income grows after each Litecoin halving.
What happened at the last Litecoin halving in 2023?
At block 2,520,000 on August 2, 2023 the subsidy dropped from 12.5 to 6.25 LTC. Litecoin block production continued without interruption — the halving is a consensus rule, not an event that can fail — and the network's hashrate and difficulty adjusted over the following weeks as less-efficient hardware fell away, the same pattern as 2015 and 2019 (see the table above).
Does the Litecoin halving change Dogecoin rewards?
No. Dogecoin has no halving — every DOGE block pays a fixed 10,000 DOGE regardless of what Litecoin's subsidy does. For merged miners that is the cushion: the DOGE leg of Scrypt revenue is untouched at block 3,360,000. Details on our DOGE block reward page.
Will the halving make the LTC price go up?
Nobody knows, and we don't publish price predictions. Past halvings have seen every kind of price behavior. What is certain is the supply mechanics: new issuance halves, and miner economics shift exactly as the formulas on this page describe. Plan with the math, not a forecast.
