What does lit/vB mean?

Litecoin fees are a price per unit of block space, not a percentage of the amount sent. The rate is quoted in litoshis per virtual byte (lit/vB), where 1 lit = 10⁻⁸ LTC — the same construction as Bitcoin's sat/vB. Your total fee is the rate times your transaction's virtual size, whatever the value transferred.

total_fee (lits) = fee_rate (lit/vB) × tx_vsize (vB)
· typical 1-input, 2-output transaction ≈ 140 vB → at 2 lit/vB ≈ 280 lits (0.0000028 LTC)

Virtual size (vB) is the post-SegWit measure of block space consumed — Litecoin adopted SegWit in 2017, so witness data is discounted 4× just like on Bitcoin. More inputs mean a bigger vsize and a higher total fee at the same rate.

What is the mempool?

Every node keeps a waiting room of valid but unconfirmed transactions — the mempool. Miners fill each roughly 1 MvB block from it, highest fee rate first. Because Litecoin produces a block every 2.5 minutes — four times Bitcoin's cadence — and blocks are rarely full, the queue usually stays shallow and fee rates sit near the relay floor.

blocks_to_clear ≈ ceil(mempool_vsize / 1,000,000 vB)
time_to_clear ≈ blocks_to_clear × 2.5 min  ·  assumes full blocks and no new transactions

The clearing estimate is an upper-bound sketch: it assumes no new transactions arrive. On Litecoin the backlog typically clears within a block or two, so the estimate mostly matters during rare demand bursts.

Why miners care about fees

Fees add to the fixed 6.25 LTC subsidy per block, but on Litecoin they are a small slice of revenue: over the last 10 blocks, fees averaged --. The bigger picture for Litecoin miners is that most pools merge-mine Dogecoin via AuxPoW, so the same hash earns LTC subsidy + fees + the DOGE block reward — track the fee slice on the Fee Share tile on the dashboard.

Why do fees spike?

Block space supply is fixed at about 1 MvB every 2.5 minutes — roughly 576 blocks a day. Demand normally sits far below that, which is why Litecoin fees stay near the minimum. Occasional bursts — token-minting fads, ordinals-style inscription waves, or heavy exchange flows — have briefly filled blocks and pushed rates up; with 4× Bitcoin's block cadence, those spikes drain correspondingly faster.

FAQ

How do I pick a Litecoin transaction fee?
Match the tier to your urgency: the fastest tier targets the next block (~2.5 minutes), the half-hour tier about 30 minutes, and the economy tier settles when the queue thins. Your total cost is the rate times your transaction's virtual size; a typical 1-input, 2-output transaction is about 140 vB. Litecoin blocks are rarely full, so even the economy tier usually confirms quickly.
What happens to an unconfirmed Litecoin transaction?
It waits in the mempool until a miner includes it or nodes eventually drop it. With 2.5-minute blocks and mostly non-full blocks, stuck transactions are rare; if one does stall you can wait, bump the fee with Replace-By-Fee (RBF) if your wallet enabled it, or attach a higher-fee child transaction (CPFP).
Do higher fees mean more miner revenue?
Yes, every fee goes to the miner on top of the fixed 6.25 LTC subsidy — but on Litecoin fees are typically well under 1% of the block reward. Most Litecoin miner income is the subsidy plus the merge-mined Dogecoin reward, since most pools mine both chains at once via AuxPoW.
